Cabinets often have water damage and change in color over the years. The options to remedy or update the appearance range from total cabinet replacement to expensive re-finishing or painting. Not only are these options expensive but they can also leave you in a mess while the process is taking place.
One very easy and inexpensive way to drastically change the look of your cabinets is to simply apply Minwax Gel Stain in the color of your choice. No sanding or time consuming preparation is needed. You can buy this in most hardware or home improvement stores. Make sure it is labeled "Gel Stain".

Steps to cabinet makeover:
- Wipe down cabinets with a wet dishcloth and allow to dry.
- You may want to remove cabinet doors but can leave them on as well. Removing may make it easier if staining both inside and outside is desired.
- You may want to remove any hardware such as knobs or handles to keep them from getting stain on them.
- Purchase Minwax gel stain in the desired color. One U.S. quart will be enough for an average size kitchen plus a couple bathrooms.
- Mix gel stain well.
- Apply gel stain to a rag and wipe on cabinets making sure you apply in the same direction, no circle patterns. This will help to eliminate any runs or lines showing up. You may want to work on one side of cabinet first or test apply on the inside of a cabinet door to see the results.
- Color can be determined as to how much gel stain is applied and how long you let it sit before wiping off. Wipe off gel stain after approximately 5 minutes making sure to wipe off in the same direction, no circle patterns.
- Allow to dry. This usually takes 4 or 5 hours.
- Re-attach hardware and cabinet doors if previously removed.
Note:
The finished product looks great and does not need any clear top coat but can be applied if desired.
